How to Create the Perfect Main Character

Writer: Lauren SilverLauren Silver

This part (of the writing process) can be quite a challenge for most. There is the struggle to write a likable, catchy character without being cliche. My favorite main characters are usually females because for me it is easier to write from the female perspective. However, creating the perfect main character has many steps, all of which will be addressed in this blog.

First off, I recommend choosing a gender, sexuality, race, and defining features. These physical attributes are very important to create before you define the personality of the character. Many writers choose to go with attributes that they either understand or have written before. In other words, you can choose the gender, sexuality, etc of yourself. If you want a challenge (as a writer), I recommend changing things up. For example in my first book, "A New Chapter", the female lead was very similar to me; however, the male lead was completely out of imagination. Once you have determined these crucial aspects, you can start the personality. You want to make sure that your character is not too vanilla (unless their conflict is battling with that).

In other words, make sure your character is dynamic and interesting. To accomplish this, add in conflicts, such as family issues or image issues. This can add a natural dilemma. For example, in the novel I am currently writing, the main male character deals with major family issues as well as an ex-fiance conflict. It is important to add conflicts like this to the character. The main character needs to be different but complicated. As well, make sure the issues can be solved with in the novel (if you are after a happy ending).

That is how to create the perfect main character. The key points are define specific physical attributes then decide on a dynamic and interesting personality, spotted with conflicts. The types of conflicts will be explained in one of my future posts (so stay connected). If you have any questions, leave a comment!
